1.2 Definitions

One of the problems constantly faced by those new to the physical sciences is the jungle of jargon used constantly in those fields. To make matters worse, the jargon often sounds like ordinary English; common words can be detected if one listens closely, but they seem not to be used in any understandable way.

To remedy this we have to start out with a discussion of terms. These terms are used over and over again. So many of them are collected here, both so that you, the reader, can learn them all at once, and so you will know where to find them later if you need to refresh your memory.
