Introduction to BMEC

Biomedical Materials and Engineering Center of Wuhan University of Technology, as a Hubei Biomedical Materials Engineering Center, established in 1990, is one of the science research, product manufacture and distributive institute. It was also one institute of the first few universities being supported by the national “Project 211” which is to build around 100 key universities and a number of key disciplines entering the 21 century. At present, the BMEC is authorized to confer Master’s degree programs and Ph.D. degree programs of biomedical engineering and materials science, and there is one post-doctoral working station for scientific research of materials. BMEC has extensively and intimately established academic links with numerous external universities and institutions of United State, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Japan, Italy and Hong Kong special districts of China et al.. In this center the total number of institute staff is 15, within which include 4 professors, 6 associate professors. At present, there are more than 30 postgraduates & Ph.D candidates and 15 part-time famous guest professors and specialists in the world. 

BMEC has undertook numerous research projects, such as National Key Basic Research Project (973 project), Hi-Tech Research and Development Program of China (863 project), National Natural Science Foundation of China, Key Technologies R&D Program of China, National “Project 211” program and other projects of the State and Ministry. It has obtained many research achievements on the national and international advanced level and a lot of national and provincial research and science awards as well as more than 15 patents. 

The main field of current research activities include: 

              - biomedical inorganic materials, 

              - biomedical polymer materials, 

              - tissue engineering and hybrid materials, 

              - biochemistry, 

              - molecular biology, 

              - nano-biomaterials and 

              - computer simulation & emulation of biomedical materials.

Through the steadfast efforts of our scientists, more than 10 kinds products had been developed until now, such as:

              - Porous biodegradable ceramic artificial bone, 

              - Bioceramic middle ear device, 

              - Bioceramic drain tube for middle ear, 

              - Degradable polymer materials for internal fixation of fracture of bone, 

              - Composite type artificial hip joint prosthesis made of ceramics and metal, 

              - Hydroxyapatite bioceramic porous granular, 

              - New type bioceramic inorganic bone cement, 

              - Degradable ceramic drug carrier, 

              - Ceramic-stainless total knee joint of composite and hinge type and Artificial skull made of fiber reinforced polymer, 

some of them have been admitted by State Food and Drug Administration of China. BMEC possesses perfect facilities for synthesis, preparation, processing and test & analysis of biomedical materials. In recent years financial support for major research facilities has increased. Much advanced equipment has been developed or imported. BMEC has become a material research and product development base of Hubei Province in the field of biomedical materials and related biomedical devices.
